Tap Dancing FAQ

A colection of frequently asked questions about the art of tap dancing.

What is Tap Dancing?
Tap dancing is a percussive form of dance that prominently features the sound of shoes tapping on the floor. Tap dancers wear special shoes with metal plates, known as taps, affixed to toe area and heel area of the sole.

Is Tap Dancing Difficult to Learn?
Tap dancing steps range from very easy to extremely difficult, so the art can be enjoyed by all levels of dancers, from absolute beginners to professionals. Recreational dancers can have fun dancing to their favorite songs after learning only a few basic steps. More serious dancers can study for many years to become a competitive or professional dancer.

How Much Do Tap Shoes Cost?
Most tap dancers will spend in the range of $40 to $80 USD for tap shoes, but cheap tap shoes, usually made of imitation leather, can found for $20 to $30 USD and the most expensive professional tap shoes typically cost between $200 to $400 USD. For more information see Buying Tap Shoes.

What Should I Wear When Tap Dancing?
Many dancing studios require a very specific type of clothing for their young students, but most do not have such restrictions for their adult dance students. If your studio does not have a dress code, wear comfortable clothing that does not restrict your body's movement in any way. Floor length skirts and boot-style long pants are not suitable for tap dancing because they cover your ankles and feet and because bending your knees can make them drag on the floor and cause you to trip. Some tap dancers prefer funky, street-style dancewear and others prefer elegant dancewear. If you are unsure of what to wear, stretchy exercise clothing is always a good choice. For suppliers of dancewear see Tap Dancing Clothing

What is the Difference Between Broadway and Rhythm Tap?
The short answer is that Broadway tap is musical theater style show dancing and rhythm tap uses tap dancing as a percussive musical instrument. For video examples and more information about both styles see About Rhythm Tap and About Broadway Tap.
